Fairbury, Nebraska

Both the Bonham Theatre, and the First National Bank, located on the northwest corner of Fifth and E streets, were at one time owned by Luther Bonham.

Bonham Theatre's exterior was designed in Spanish Colonial Revival style and features a projecting ceramic tile cornice, arched windows, ornamental brickwork and a neon marquee sign.

The theater, built in 1926, featured vaudeville acts and picture shows in the early days. Between double features in the 1930s, talent shows were conducted with local talent. Dressing rooms were located in the back of the theater.

A small movie screen was lifted to the ceiling for the live acts to perform on the stage behind the screen.

Today the Bonham Theatre is strictly a movie theater and the First National Bank building houses the bank and the Burkley Family Center.

Historic Square

The Fairbury Commercial District, consisting of a 10-block downtown area of 97 contributing buildings, was officially entered in the National Register of Historic Places on June 20, 1997

I.0.0.F. Temple Building

What is today known as the Ackerman Building was originally called the I.0.0.F. Temple Building. It was the first building downtown to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building housed the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 54 and was built in 1894-1

In 1907, the Fairbury community received a grant of $12,500 from Andrew Carnegie. Ground was broken on October 5, 1908, and the library opened to the public December 10, 1909
